Universal Virtues & Character Traits

This index represents those universal principles vital to the growth of humanity. They are the building blocks in advancing the moral environment of our democracy and the moral character of our people.

AdaptabilityAdaptability: to adjust (oneself) to new or changed circumstances.
AmbitionAmbition: a strong desire to succeed, or gain fame, wealth, power, etc.
AssertivenessAssertiveness: being positive or confident in a persistent way.
BenevolenceBenevolence: inclined to do good deeds; being kind and charitable.
BraveryBravery: courage to face danger; not afraid.
CaringCaring: to feel concern about others. (2) To feel love or a liking for another.
CharacterCharacter: moral strength; a distinctive trait, quality, or good reputation of a person.
CharityCharity: a voluntary giving to others in need.
CheerfulnessCheerfulness: showing a warm, joyful feeling.
CitizenshipCitizenship: the duties, rights, and privileges of this status. (2) A person’s conduct as a citizen.
CleanlinessCleanliness: keeping oneself or one’s surroundings clean.
CommitmentCommitment: dedicated to a course of action. (2) A pledge to do something.
CompassionCompassion: showing sorrow, or sympathy for the sufferings or needs of others.
ConsiderationConsideration: thoughtful regard for others. (2) Careful thought regarding others feelings.
ContentmentContentment: being satisfied; happy with what one has or is.
CooperationCooperation: the act of working together for a common purpose.
CourageCourage: the quality of being fearless in facing difficulties, instead of withdrawing from it.
CourtesyCourtesy: gracious behavior; a polite, helpful, or considerate act or remark.
CreativityCreativity: artistic or intellectual inventiveness. (2) Bring into being; showing imagination.
DependabilityDependability: reliable, trustworthy; that can be depended on.
DeterminationDetermination: a conclusion or decision arrived at by thought or investigation.
DisciplineDiscipline: self-control or orderly conduct. (2) A system of rules that corrects or punishes.
DiscretionDiscretion: the quality of being discreet, or careful about what one does or says; prudence.
DutyDuty: respect and obedience that one shows toward parents, family and occupation. (2.) Service to community and country.
EmpathyEmpathy: ability to share another's emotions, thoughts, or feelings.
EnduranceEndurance: the ability to last, to continue, to remain, to holdout.
EnthusiasmEnthusiasm: to express high interest, be inspired. (2) Passion.
EqualityEquality: being equal; having the same political, social, and economic rights.
FaithFaith: unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence. (2) Complete trust or allegiance to some person or thing. (3) A religion or a system of religious beliefs.
Family CommitmentFamily Commitment: a devotion to family and home. (2) Maintaining the household establishment.
 
 

ForesightForesight: the ability to foresee. (2) A thoughtful regard for the future.
ForgivenessForgiveness: to give up resentment against or the desire to punish. (2) To pardon.
FortitudeFortitude: the strength to bear misfortune. (2) The courage that permits one to endure.
FreedomFreedom: the state or quality of being free. (2) The absence of hindrance, confinement or repression.
FriendlinessFriendliness: not being hostile; showing friendly feelings.
GenerosityGenerosity: willingness to give or share. (2) Nobility of mind.
GentlenessGentleness: refine, courteous; a kindly disposition.
GratitudeGratitude: showing appreciation for favors or benefits received.
HealthinessHealthiness: physical or mental well-being; having good health.
HelpfulnessHelpfulness: giving assistance without reward.
HonestyHonesty: the state or quality of being honest. (2) Refraining from lying, cheating, or stealing; holding to high standards.
HonorHonor: high regard or great respect given. (2) A keen sense of right and wrong.
HumilityHumility: showing an absence of pride. (2) The quality of being humble.
IdealismIdealism: thought based on a conception of things as they should be or as one would wish them to be. (2) A striving to achieve one’s ideals.
InitiativeInitiative: the action of taking the first step or move. (2) Originating new ideas or methods.
IntegrityIntegrity: the quality of being of sound moral principle; honesty, uprightness. (2) The state of being complete.
JoyfulnessJoyfulness: happy, glad, full of joy. (2) The expression of showing such feeling.
JusticeJustice: the quality of being right and correct. (2) Sound reason; rightfulness; validity.
KindnessKindness: gentle, tenderhearted treatment. (2) The possession of sympathetic or generous qualities.
LoveLove: a deep and tender feeling of affection or devotion to a person or persons. (2) A strong liking for or interest in something (a love of music).
LoyaltyLoyalty: quality of being loyal. (2) Faithfulness to a person, government, cause, duty, etc. – Allegiance.
ModerationModeration: avoidance of excesses or extremes. (2) Keeping within bounds; self-restraint.
ModestyModesty: decency; unassuming or humble behavior. (2) The quality of being modest.
ObedienceObedience: a willingness to obey. (2) Giving in to the orders or instructions of one in authority.
OptimismOptimism: the tendency to take the most hopeful or cheerful view of matters or to expect the best outcome.
OrderlinessOrderliness: neat or tidy in arrangement. (2) Well-behaved; law-abiding; peaceful.
PatiencePatience: the quality of being patient. (2) The will or ability to wait or endure without compliant.
PatriotismPatriotism: love and loyal or devoted support of one’s country.
PeacefulnessPeacefulness: not quarrelsome; free from disturbance or disorder. (2) Quiet calm.
PerseverancePerseverance: the act of persevering. (2) Continued, patient effort.
 
 

PolitenessPoliteness: having or showing good manners. (2) Being courteous, considerate or tactful.
PrivacyPrivacy: the condition of being private. (2) Withdrawal from company or public view.
PrudencePrudence: careful management of one’s personal affairs. (2) The quality or fact of being prudent.
PunctualityPunctuality: careful observant of an appointed time. (2) On time; prompt.
PurposefulnessPurposefulness: resolutely aiming as a specific goal. (2) Determination.
ReliabilityReliability: that can be depended on. (2) A person or thing that can be counted upon to do what is expected.
ResourcefulnessResourcefulness: able to deal creatively and effectively with problems, difficulties, etc.
RespectRespect: hold in high regard. (2) To feel or show honor or esteem for.
ResponsibilityResponsibility: condition, quality, fact, or instance of being responsible. (2) A thing or person that one is responsible for; dependability.
Self-actualizationSelf-actualization: full development of one’s abilities, ambitions, etc. (2) Realize in action; to make realistic to self.
Self-disciplineSelf-discipline: controlling of oneself or one’s desires, actions, habits, etc.
Self-preservationSelf-preservation: preservation of oneself from danger, injury, or death.
Self-realizationSelf-realization: complete fulfillment of the self. (2) Complete development of one’s own capabilities.
Self-relianceSelf-reliance: reliance or faith in one’s own judgment, abilities, etc.
Self-respectSelf-respect: proper respect for oneself and one’s worth as a person.
Self-restraintSelf-restraint: restraint imposed on oneself by oneself. (2) Self-control.
SensitivitySensitivity: the condition or quality of being sensitive. (2) Tender; easily hurt.
ServiceService: friendly help. (2) Volunteer aid to community. (3) Work done for others; duty, public employment.
SharingSharing: to share or divide something equally. (2) Giving, receiving; taking part with others in some activity.
TactTact: judgment of the right thing to say or do without offending. (2) Skill in dealing with people.
TeamworkTeamwork: joint action by a group of people. (2) Work done by or with a team.
TemperanceTemperance: self-restraint in behavior, expression, indulgence of the appetites. (2) Moderation.
ThankfulnessThankfulness: feeling or expressing thanks; being grateful.
ThriftThrift: careful management of one's money or resources; frugality.
ToleranceTolerance: being tolerant, especially of views, beliefs, and practices of others that differ from one’s own. (2) Freedom from bigotry or prejudice.
TrustTrust: a firm belief in the honesty, integrity, reliability, and justice of another person or thing.
TrustworthinessTrustworthiness: worthy of trust; dependable; reliable.
TruthfulnessTruthfulness: the state or quality of being true. (2) That which accords with fact and reality.
VirtuousnessVirtuousness: having, or characterized by moral virtue. (2) Having a righteous nature.
WisdomWisdom: the power of judging rightly, and following the soundest course of action, based on knowledge, experience and understanding.
